Sonification - PhD

My PhD research focused on the use of sonification, or using sound to represent data. I was particularly interested in using sound to represent spatial data, and how it could be best combined with visual representations of data.

Bearman, N. (2013) Using Sound to Represent Uncertainty in Spatial Data. PhD Thesis, University of East Anglia. DOI  Thesis (6.5 MB), Data (201 MB).

Alongside my these and related data files (above) I also have a range of resources and videos that might be useful.

Here are some videos showing how the sonification could work, in ArcGIS and Google Maps. The code for both is available to download.

Sonification in ArcGIS

Remember the ArcGIS code is written in VBA, so you need the VBA extension activated to run it. Check the readme.txt file for details.

Sonification in Google Maps API
